Planning senior portraits in the Twin Cities and want images that actually feel like your senior, not everyone else on Instagram? I specialize in cinematic, creative senior sessions across Minneapolis, St. Paul, Wayzata, Minnetonka, and beyond.
If you’re here because you love big ideas, creative styling, and portraits that don’t look like everyone else’s, you’re in the right place.
This post is here to spark ideas and help you imagine what’s possible. If you’re curious what those kinds of concepts look like when they’re fully planned, styled, and photographed from start to finish, you can explore my Unique Creative Senior Portraits in Minnesota.
The right senior portrait photographer does more than give you a few nice photos. They shape how your teen remembers this moment and how they see themselves stepping into whatever comes next.
At Megan Engeseth Photography , I create cinematic, editorial senior portraits that blend drama, softness, and real personality. No stiff poses, no “smile but not like that,” no generic one size fits all look. Just portraits that feel like your senior and make them look like the lead in their own movie.
This guide is here to help you understand how senior pictures work in Minnesota, what actually affects the final images, and how to choose a photographer who fits your senior, not just the algorithm.
You’ll get clarity around style, timing, locations, pricing structure, and what a fully guided senior portrait experience looks like, so you can move forward with confidence instead of guesswork.
If you are starting your search or you are already deep in the “Google spiral,” this is your shortcut to choosing a photographer you actually trust.
Not all senior photographers work the same way. My background is in theatre, which means I understand expression, storytelling, and how to bring real emotion out under bright lights. I do not plop kids in front of a tree and hope for the best. I direct, coach, and shape the light so they feel confident and look incredible.
On my senior portraits page , you can see examples of how this looks in real sessions across Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding suburbs.
When you work with me, you get:
The goal is simple. Your senior should feel seen, celebrated, and more confident walking out than when they walked in.
Minnesota is beautiful and a little chaotic, which is fun artistically and demanding technically. You want someone who knows how to work with:
I have photographed seniors all over the Twin Cities and beyond, from downtown St. Paul streets and wooded trails to docks on Lake Minnetonka and fields that glow at sunset. If you want to see a range of looks and locations, explore my senior portraits gallery .
Knowing how to handle Minnesota’s seasons means you are not gambling your one senior session on someone guessing where the light will be nice.
I keep the process clear and supportive from beginning to end. No guessing, no awkward silence, no “we will figure it out when we get there.” Here is how it works.
We start by talking about your senior, not just the photos. What they love, what they hate, what makes them light up. We cover:
If you are wondering what to wear, start with my in depth wardrobe guide, What to Wear for Your High School Senior Portraits .
If hair and makeup are stressing you out, I also have a dedicated page on that: Professional Makeup for Senior Portraits .
On the day of your session, my job is to direct and support, not judge or rush. Seniors usually arrive a little nervous. That is normal. Within 15 to 20 minutes, most are laughing and owning it.
In my St. Paul studio , I use controlled light, fabrics, backdrops, and posing to create fashion, fine art, or dramatic looks that feel like magazine pages. Studio is ideal for:
On location, we use movement, environment, and light to tell the story of who your senior is right now. Think:
I direct posing and movement the whole way. Your senior will never be left hanging with “just act natural” and no support.
After the session, I go through your images, select the best, and retouch them cleanly and professionally. No over smoothing, no plastic skin.
You will see your images in a curated viewing experience. From there, we plan which images become:
You can preview artwork options here: Boutique Products and Wall Art .
What you wear changes the whole mood of the session. It impacts how you feel, how you move, and how the final images look.

A few quick rules that never fail:
You do not need to reinvent your entire wardrobe. You just need a few intentional, well styled looks that feel like you, leveled up.
Yearbook deadlines sneak up on people. Do not let that be you.
I break this down more in When to Schedule Your Senior Portraits and Yearbook Photo .
In general:
The earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have with dates, locations, and makeup timing.
Pricing across Minnesota is all over the place. You will find everything from “200 dollars and all the files” to luxury studios that start at several thousand. My work sits in the full service space, with flexible options depending on how much variety and artwork you want.
My senior portrait options are built to meet teens and parents where they are, from “we just want a few incredible images” to “give us the full cinematic story.”
Artwork and digital image collections for full sessions begin at $1,690, and most families invest between $3,000 and $8,000 in albums, wall art, and digital collections.
You can see current details and offerings on my Senior Portraits page .
Most senior sessions with me include:
Common add ons and upgrades include:
The structure is simple. Choose the level of session time you want, then select the artwork and digital package that fits your goals.
Location choice can completely change the feel of your gallery. Some seniors go full urban. Others go lakes, fields, or a mix of both. Some start in the studio and then move outdoors.
A few popular directions:
Lakes, docks, marinas, and harbor light. If you want to see an example, read Effortless Wayzata and Minnetonka Guy Senior Portraits .
Alleys, murals, glass and steel, rooftops, and neon. Sessions like Minneapolis Senior Picture Photographer: A Little Bit of Drama and Whimsy give you a feel for how editorial and cinematic this can look.
Trails, long grasses, and soft backlight. Perfect for boho, romantic, or earthy looks.
For fashion, drama, fine art portraits, creative sets, and weather proof consistency, studio is unbeatable. You can take a peek at the space here: The Studio .

If your son has already announced “I hate photos” or “I do not know what to do with my hands,” you are not alone.
I created a full resource just for this: The Ultimate Guide to Guy Senior Pictures .
In sessions with guys, we focus on:
You can also see how this plays out in real sessions like Wayzata and Minnetonka guy senior portraits .
If your senior is artistic, dramatic, theatre obsessed, or just delightfully weird in the best way, you are very much my people.
I lean into creative concepts, story driven imagery, and sets that look like they belong in a film still or an editorial campaign. These posts are a good starting point:
We can incorporate:
This is where my theatre brain and fine art brain get to have a party.
Here is how to decide what fits best.
You may want a mini session if:
You may want the 2 hour Signature Session if:
You may want the 4 hour All Inclusive Session if:
If you are still not sure, start by browsing the Senior Portraits page and then reach out so we can talk through what makes sense for your family.
You do not need another generic gallery of fake smiles. You deserve senior portraits that look like your teen, feel like your teen, and celebrate everything they have become and everything they are stepping into.
If you are ready to start planning:
Then reach out through the contact form below so we can schedule a consultation and start building something unforgettable together. You bring the senior. I will bring the light, the direction, and the “holy shit, that is me” moment when they see their portraits.
If you’re ready to move beyond research and want to understand what a fully guided senior portrait experience actually looks like, start here: Senior Portraits in Minneapolis–St. Paul.
If you’re still deciding what style fits your senior best, you can start here: studio senior portraits, outdoor senior portraits, or creative senior portraits. Each experience is fully guided, planned with intention, and designed to feel like you, not a cookie cutter photo shoot.
If you’re looking for portraits that feel intentional, guided, and fully taken care of, I’d love to hear what you’re envisioning. Drop me a line here and we’ll talk dates, styling, and what you want these images to say about you.
