Fine Art Portrait Photography Blog

If you’ve spent any time Googling senior photographers in Minnesota, you already know how overwhelming it gets.
Hundreds of options, similar-looking galleries, prices that range from $200 to $20,000 with no clear explanation of why.
It’s a lot.
This post isn’t a how-to guide on senior portraits. It’s an honest look at what actually separates the best senior portrait photographer in Minnesota from a forgettable one and why that distinction matters more than most people realize when they’re in the middle of booking season.
If you want to dive into what my senior portrait sessions actually look like from start to finish, that’s the place to start.
Best isn’t about having the most followers or the prettiest feed. It’s about what happens before, during, and after your session and whether you walk away with portraits that actually feel like your senior or just another set of nice-enough photos that look like everyone else’s.
Here’s what I think actually matters.
A lot of photographers hand you a date, an address, and a vague Pinterest board and call it a day. You show up, you figure it out, you get a gallery link, and then you’re on your own trying to decide what to print, where to print it, and whether the colors are going to look right on your wall.
That’s not how I work.
Every senior portrait session starts with an in-home planning consultation. I come to you. We talk through your senior’s personality, their style, their comfort level, and what they actually want these portraits to feel like. We plan outfits. We map out locations. We think about wall art before we ever pick up a camera.
After the session, we meet again for an image reveal and ordering appointment where I walk you through a curated slideshow of your retouched portraits. We design artwork together. Nothing is left to chance or to you alone at 11pm trying to figure out canvas sizes.
Professional hair and makeup is included. Access to my in-studio fashion closet is included. Direction throughout the entire session is included. You are never left to fend for yourself or flail around in front of a camera with no idea what to do with your hands.
I am intentionally low volume. I take on a small number of senior clients each season, which means when you book with me, you get my full attention, my full creativity, and a session that isn’t sandwiched between six others that day.
A lot of my clients come back. Not just for senior pictures, for headshots when they start their career, for branding sessions when they launch a business, for family portraits a few years later. That’s not because I’m trying to upsell them. It’s because somewhere between the planning consultation and the ordering appointment, we actually get to know each other. That’s what happens when you’re not running a factory.
I’m also a genuine weirdo about this work in the best possible way. My background is in theatre, which means I understand expression, performance, and how to pull something real out of a person who is standing in front of bright lights feeling awkward. I don’t pose people like furniture. I direct them like a scene. The results look completely different.
That approach caught the attention of the Today Show, which featured my work. Not because the images were technically impressive, but because they actually looked like the people in them.
Photography pricing in Minnesota ranges wildly. You can find photographers charging $200 for a session with all the digital files included. That sounds like a deal until you understand what you’re actually getting.
At the low end of the market, you typically get a session, a gallery link, and a goodbye. The images are yours to print wherever you want, whenever you want, in whatever size you feel like guessing at. There’s no planning, no styling guidance, no direction, no hair and makeup, no artwork design, and no one to call when you’re not sure if the files are the right resolution for a large print.
What I offer is a completely different category of experience. The session fee for a senior portrait session is $500, and that covers the full in-home planning consultation, professional hair and makeup, up to two locations, fashion closet access, and guided posing and expression coaching throughout. A $1,000 deposit is applied directly to your artwork order at your ordering appointment.
Most families invest between $1,000 and $7,000 in portraits, albums, and wall art; artwork that’s designed to live in your home for decades, not sit in a folder on your desktop.
You can see finished products and boutique artwork options here.
That’s the difference. It’s not just photos. It’s a complete portrait experience with a result that’s designed to last.
I work with seniors from across the Twin Cities. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Wayzata, Edina, Minnetonka, Maple Grove, Plymouth, and beyond. I also travel across all five states and take on international commissions for families who want something specific and are willing to make the trip for it.
My studio is in St. Paul, and I’ve photographed seniors in every kind of environment you can imagine from warehouse studios, lakeshores, downtown alleys, old theatres, open fields, forests, rooftops, and locations that don’t have names yet because we found them together.
I’m especially good with seniors who are nervous, who hate photos, who are neurodivergent, who are introverted, who are LGBTQ+, who are theatre kids, who are athletes, or who have a very specific vision and need someone who can actually execute it. The direction I provide isn’t generic. It’s built around the specific human in front of me.
If your senior is the kind of person who lights up when given something real to work with — a concept, a character, a feeling — we are going to have a lot of fun. You can see some of what that looks like in my creative senior portrait work.
This is worth calling out specifically because most photographers don’t include it.
Professional hair and makeup styling is part of every senior session I do. Not a salon blowout you schedule separately and arrive hoping it holds. Actual on-site styling by a professional, designed to photograph beautifully and still look like your senior, not like a costume.
It matters more than most people expect. It changes how your senior feels walking into the session, which changes how they hold themselves, which changes the images. You can read more about how I approach it on the professional makeup for senior portraits page.
If you’ve been comparing photographers and something about this feels right, the next step is simple. Head to my senior portraits page to see the full experience and gallery, and then reach out through the contact form to start a conversation.
I’ll tell you honestly whether I’m the right fit. And if I am, we’ll build something your senior will actually love.
If youโre still deciding what style fits your senior best, you can start here: studio senior portraits, outdoor senior portraits, or creative senior portraits. Each experience is fully guided, planned with intention, and designed to feel like you, not a cookie cutter photo shoot.
If youโre looking for portraits that feel intentional, guided, and fully taken care of, Iโd love to hear what youโre envisioning. Drop me a line here and weโll talk dates, styling, and what you want these images to say about you.
