Your headshot is doing more work than you think. In Minneapolis and St. Paul real estate, your photo shows up before you do. It is on your yard signs, your Zillow profile, your business cards, your brokerage page, your LinkedIn. Before a seller ever calls you back, they have already decided something about you based on that image.
So the question is not whether you need a professional realtor headshot. The question is whether the one you have right now is actually helping you close.
I photograph realtor headshots in my St. Paul studio and on location across the Twin Cities, and I have seen firsthand what a strong headshot does for an agent’s business. It is not about looking “nice.” It is about looking like someone a client would trust with the biggest financial decision of their life.
The best realtor headshots do three things at once. They look professional, they feel approachable, and they actually look like you. Not you ten years ago. Not you with so much retouching that clients do a double take at the open house. You, right now, looking like someone who knows what they are doing.
What does not work is what I see constantly on Minneapolis brokerage sites: a headshot taken against a plain gray background with flat lighting, stiff posture, and a smile that looks like it is being held hostage. That kind of image does not communicate confidence. It communicates “I grabbed this at a headshot mill in 20 minutes.”
The difference between a forgettable headshot and one that actually builds trust is intentionality. The lighting, the expression, the background, the styling. All of it matters.
Every realtor headshot session at my studio includes professional hair and makeup. This is not optional and it is not an upsell. It is built into the experience because it makes a measurable difference in how the final images look.
Professional makeup for photography is not about looking “done up.” It is about making sure your skin looks even and natural on camera, that your features photograph clearly under studio lighting, and that you look polished without looking like someone else. My makeup artist works with all skin tones and textures, and the goal is always the same: you, but camera-ready.
For realtors especially, this matters. Your headshot needs to translate across print and digital at every size, from a tiny thumbnail on Realtor.com to a large print on a bus bench ad. Professional styling makes sure it holds up everywhere.
I shoot realtor headshots both in my St. Paul studio and on location across Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs. Each option works well, and the right choice depends on your brand.
Studio sessions give you a clean, controlled look. The lighting is consistent, the backgrounds are intentional, and the focus stays entirely on you. This is a strong choice if you want headshots that look polished across every platform without competing with a busy background.
On-location sessions can work beautifully if you want to tie your headshot to a specific market. I have shot realtor headshots in downtown Minneapolis lofts, in front of beautiful residential architecture in Edina and Wayzata, and at luxury properties across the metro. If your brand is neighborhood-specific, a location shoot can reinforce that.
Either way, I guide you through wardrobe choices, posing, and expression so you never feel stiff or unsure. That is the part most realtors tell me made the biggest difference. They expected a good photo. They did not expect to feel that comfortable in front of a camera.
Wardrobe matters more than most people think. The wrong outfit can undercut an otherwise great headshot, and the right one can elevate everything.
For realtor headshots, I generally recommend solid colors that complement your skin tone, clean lines, and layers that add dimension without distracting. A blazer or structured jacket works well for most agents. Avoid loud patterns, logos, and trendy pieces that will date the image quickly.
Think about your market, too. If you primarily work in luxury real estate across the western suburbs, a more polished, elevated look makes sense. If your brand is more approachable and community-focused, something smart-casual might be the better fit. I help you figure this out before your session so there is no guessing on the day.
A professional realtor headshot is a business investment, not a vanity project. When your headshot communicates confidence, approachability, and professionalism, it does real work for you.
Clients choose agents they feel they can trust. Your headshot is often the first signal they get about who you are and how seriously you take your business. A polished, current headshot tells a potential seller that you pay attention to details and invest in your own brand. A dated or low-quality one tells them the opposite.
I have worked with realtors across the Twin Cities who came in thinking they just needed a new photo for their business card and left understanding that their headshot is one of the hardest-working pieces of their entire marketing strategy.
How much do realtor headshots cost?
Professional headshot sessions at Megan Engeseth Photography start at $490 and go up depending on the scope of the shoot and your final product selections. Every session includes professional hair and makeup, full styling guidance, and a guided session in my St. Paul studio or on location. Contact me for a custom quote.
How often should I update my headshot?
Every one to two years, or sooner if your appearance has changed significantly. Your headshot should look like the person clients meet in real life.
Can I get headshots for my whole team?
Yes. I photograph team headshots for brokerages and real estate groups across Minneapolis and St. Paul. Team sessions are structured so everyone gets individual attention while maintaining a consistent look across the group. Reach out and I will put together a custom plan.
What if I have never had a professional headshot before?
That is completely fine, and more common than you think. I guide you through every part of the process, from what to wear to how to stand to what to do with your hands. You do not need to know how to pose. That is my job.
