Fields, Streets, and Rooftops: An Urban-Inspired Senior Portrait Session

Hey ya’ll! Senior season is officially kicked off!! Last years are graduating, class of 2020 is getting ready to take the step up to seniors in high school!
I usually love June because it’s cooler and the flowers are starting to bud. But for some reason, I guess Minnesota has decided to bless us with 85+ degree weather just so I can sweat my a$$ off during sessions year round! (Don’t worry – the clients are fine. They have amazing makeup to keep them looking fresh and comfortable!) We won’t even talk about the mosquitos that surprised me this week.
Katlyn from my Class of 2019 VIP team is being featured today!! I can’t get over that GORGEOUS dress she is wearing! I think it was FREE PEOPLE if I remember correctly – but it worked absolutely perfectly in the field where we were photographing. If you are thinking about doing your pictures in a field/nature location – make sure you coordinate your outfits well! This beautiful BOHO style dress is perfect for the vibe we were looking for in the flower fields!
We hit the city for some fun images and then ended on the most BEAUTIFUL rooftop! What do you guys think of the sunset rooftop images? Aren’t they amazing!!
Katlyn – have an AMAZING time in Texas for college! Don’t’ forget to visit my studio when you’re home for breaks. 🙂

Explore Senior Portrait Session Styles
Every senior portrait session is designed around who you are, not a preset formula. If you’re just beginning the planning process, start with an overview of senior portraits to see how sessions are customized from styling to final artwork.
Some seniors feel most confident in a controlled, editorial environment. Studio senior portrait sessions are designed with intentional lighting, clean backdrops, and creative sets that keep the focus on expression and presence.
Others are drawn to texture, architecture, and movement. Urban senior portraits incorporate city streets, rooftops, and industrial spaces for a more cinematic, modern feel.
If natural light and open space feel more aligned, outdoor senior portrait sessions take advantage of fields, water, and seasonal landscapes throughout Minnesota.
For seniors who want something more conceptual, creative and editorial senior portraits push beyond traditional portraits with storytelling, styling, and imaginative visual direction.
And for students who want to highlight athletics, performance, or specialized skills, sports and talents senior portrait sessions are built to showcase dedication, personality, and range without turning the session into a cliché.
