Every year I submit images to the Senior Style Guide’s TOP 100 High School Senior Photographer contest. Last year I actually won… not one category, not two, but THREE. Icon status. I’m still not over it.

The images that won? Britta’s session. Tennis rackets, golf courses, downtown city streets, and a girl who knew exactly how to work all of it.

When Your Sport Becomes the Session#

I always joke that “sportsing” isn’t really my thing. I grew up more paintbrush than tennis racket. But sessions like Britta’s remind me why sports senior portraits are some of my favorites to shoot. There’s so much personality to pull from. The gear, the locations, the attitude. It practically directs itself.

Tennis, Golf, and Downtown Minneapolis#

Britta brought both her tennis and golf worlds into her session and we took it downtown for the city portion. Contrast between athletic and editorial, movement and stillness, fields and streetlights. The result was exactly the kind of work I love making: cinematic, specific to her, and honestly just really fun.
